A “Green” Bathroom

One of my smaller goals lately was to paint and decorate my new bathroom in all “green” or repurposed materials. It turns out that “green” is pricey (read: $99 for a hemp shower curtain), so I did a lot more repurposing than I did buying “green”.

The bathroom has dated pale yellow tiling, giving me two choices; work with the pale yellow or fight with the pale yellow. I decided to work with it, bringing several other accent colors into the room.

I found fabric at Goodwill that was loud and boisterous; lime green fabric with yellow, orange, pink and white paisley boldly covering it.

I haven’t sewed in years, but I dug out my mom’s sewing machine and sewed my own shower curtain using said green paisley material.

After I’d sewed all of my seams, I placed my own grommet holes (!)…

Among the things I’ve used in the bathroom are repurposed shower hooks, RIT die, a new (but thrifted) backing shower curtain, a new (but thrifted) shower liner, and the remaining 1/3 gallon of pale yellow paint from a previous paint job (found in my parent’s basement).

The result? A funky bathroom decor that works with, instead of fighting with, it’s 1960′s pale yellow tiles. Besides that, it’s a bathroom I can feel good about that was within my budget and left a minimal impact on the environment.

So glad you repurposed! I think that is truly green, because it has already been manufactured and is finding a second life. That keeps it out of landfills and less demand for the materials to create new. Way to embrace the yellow tile, too!
