Note: In case you missed it, check out my previous blog on St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake to get the backstory here.
Using a recipe I found on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s website, I baked my own Gooey Butter Cake tonight. If I was going to try this St. Louis culinary delight for the first time, I wanted to try it right; from scratch and in my own kitchen.
Here’s the thing that I’ve learned about St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake: It’s delightfully terrible for you. It tastes something like 100 donuts mashed into a dense, gooey mixture, baked, and with powdered sugar on top.
The main ingredients are butter, sugar, and corn syrup, and the nutritional content is, well…it’s really not. There’s absolutely nothing nutritional about this cake.
St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake, I think I love you.

Me want now.
mmmm…..butter cake…….
oh my gosh, we were big fans of this growing up in st. louis! every time my grandparents came in town (and even now they still do this at 85 years old), they’d take us to federhofer’s in south city to get one. my grandma said they had the best in the city.
so, i’m officially going to blame this blog entry for my trip to federhofer’s in the morning and my soon to be expanding waistline!
it is sooooo good, though, isn’t it?
