Back Porch Sittin’

What’s small town life without a porch to sit on when the summer days get longer and there are cold beer and good books to be consumed? When I lived in New York City, I’d sometimes slip, calling my front stoop a front porch. My friends there teased me relentlessly about it. This year, I decided that my back porch needed to be transformed into the place of comfort that back porches are designed to be.

Here’s what my porch looked like at the start of summer:

This was unacceptable. It was neither warm nor cozy; welcoming nor comfortable. This small town girl had her work cut out for her.

A couple of days of hard work, and this is what I turned my back porch into… Unfortunately, there’s not a good place for my porch swing, but that just gives me something to look forward to when I own my own home later down the road.

The house itself isn’t fancy, but the porch is a place of refuge now for me. There’s nothing else that brings the comfort of sitting outside after a long day of work, drinking something cold and talking with someone you love on  a small town porch. I hope that you have your own version of the small town porch; someplace that’s quiet and comfortable and safe for you.

  • Amen, sister! A porch big enough for a swing was one of the requirements when I bought my house and now that I’m apartment living, outdoor space is always something I look for. My back porch is currently covered from one end to the other with potted veggies so there’s an added bonus (or there will be within the next few weeks, I hope!)

  • Your porch looks wonderful! I can’t believe you were able to cozy it up so well. Love your berries at the top of the page too! You sure grow beautiful berries!

  • my porch is my favorite place on earth, so i totally understand. i love your porch makeover, it definitely looked like it needed some tlc.

  • Aw, thanks! Porches = a little piece of heaven.
