Saturday, December 4th was the 12th Annual YMCA Christmas House Tour in Festus, Missouri. The tour featured eight homes in Festus, Crystal City and Pevely. I had the pleasure of visiting four of those eight homes. Author Kathryn Simpson and I share two things; our hometown and our passion for words. Her first novel, The Farmer’s Story, was published earlier this year.  If you didn’t grow up in a small Midwestern town, it might be tough to understand the relative significance of being the cheerleader who could do backflips or the running back who was interviewed on the local radio station on Saturday mornings after big games. I bought my first digital SLR camera on Camera Street in Hong Kong in November of 2006, and I’ve carried with me through a number of countries, states and cities on countless adventures, large and small. As I drove into the small, hilly town of Desoto Missouri for their Saturday farmers market in June, I noticed an immaculately-renovated historic Texaco filling station. The pump at the station indicates that gas is just $0.42 per gallon. Later that day in 2010, in another small Missouri town, gas was $2.49 per gallon. I was never very [...] This morning I ran a 5K race in Festus, Missouri sponsored by an organization called Get Fit Festus. Festus is a town of just under 10,000 people. It’s located roughly an hour south of St. Louis in Jefferson County on Interstate 55. At the end of a family’s driveway on a stretch of rural highway in Washington County, Missouri is a square white sign that reads, “YOUR FORGIVEN” on one side and “THINK GOD” on the other. Immediately across the road, the neighbor flies a Confederate flag. |
