Small Town Women

A few weeks ago, I unofficially resigned my self-appointed position as the  ”Most Liberal Woman” in my small Missouri town.
When I arrived at the hostess’s home for a local woman’s retirement party, I was surprised to find the ladies gathered around a slate-topped kitchen island in a home built in the 1940s. The house had [...]

YMCA Christmas House Tour

Saturday, December 4th was the 12th Annual YMCA Christmas House Tour in Festus, Missouri. The tour featured eight homes in Festus, Crystal City and Pevely. I had the pleasure of visiting four of those eight homes.
In 2009, my mom and I attended our first holiday home tour in Washington, Missouri. Also sponsored by the local [...]

The Farmer’s Story

Author Kathryn Simpson and I share two things; our hometown and our passion for words.  Her first novel, The Farmer’s Story, was published earlier this year.
When Insider 573 Magazine asked me if I’d like to cover Kathryn’s Farmington, Missouri book signing at Bauhaus Kaffee, I was thrilled. She and I were introduced months before via Facebook [...]

A Blogger Without Internet

I’m a blogger. I’m a social media advocate. I’m a freelance writer for online and print publications. I’m a full time director of marketing for a large organization by day, and yet I don’t have access to the internet when I’m at home at night.
When I tell you that I blog from small town Missouri, I’m [...]

High School Homecoming

Small Town Girl, photo by MommaGFunk

If you didn’t grow up in a small Midwestern town, it might be tough to understand the relative significance of being the cheerleader who could do backflips or the running back who was interviewed on the local radio station on Saturday mornings after big games.
If you didn’t grow up in a small Midwestern town, you might [...]

Small Town Missouri Camera Shops

I bought my first digital SLR camera on Camera Street in Hong Kong in November of 2006, and I’ve carried with me through a number of countries, states and cities on countless adventures, large and small.
My DSLR has accompanied me to Tibet and Mongolia; Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. It’s been in my backpack on hikes [...]

Cheap Gas in a Small Missouri Town

As I drove into the small, hilly town of Desoto Missouri for their Saturday farmers market in June, I noticed an immaculately-renovated historic Texaco filling station.

The pump at the station indicates that gas is just $0.42 per gallon.

Later that day in 2010, in another small Missouri town, gas was $2.49 per gallon.

I was never very [...]

Lettuce & Cookies

When I saw this sign yesterday at the Desoto, Missouri Farmers Market, I considered my “Your Forgiven” post last week, and thought a little levity was due A Small Town Girl’s Guide.
I present you with the most clever form of lettuce marketing in the state of Missouri – bribery in the form of cookies. I call [...]

Get Fit Festus

This morning I ran a 5K race in Festus, Missouri sponsored by an organization called Get Fit Festus. Festus is a town of just under 10,000 people. It’s located roughly an  hour south of St. Louis in Jefferson County on Interstate 55.
The Get Fit Festus race itself was enjoyable, despite incredible heat and humidity (even [...]

Your Forgiven

At the end of a family’s driveway on a stretch of rural highway in Washington County, Missouri is a square white sign that reads, “YOUR FORGIVEN” on one side and “THINK GOD” on the other. Immediately across the road, the neighbor flies a Confederate flag.
Sometimes I intentionally take a different route home because I know that my [...]
