Tour de Missouri

The Tour de Missouri is finally here.
My excitement about the race stems not from my love for the sport, but from my love for small town, Missouri. Small towns along the race route will be the recipients of a lot of press and a temporary boom in commerce.
Last night, Tour de Missouri was featured on [...]

St. Paul Lutheran Church

When I was a little girl, I went to preschool at the school associated with this church.
I have clear memories from inside the old brick school building, and I remember thinking to myself that it would be cool to grow up and come back to the school when it was very, very old.
A few years [...]

Pedestrian Traffic

On Sunday afternoon, I took a walk through downtown Farmington, Missouri. There was practically no automobile traffic, and there was even less pedestrian traffic.
Downtown Small Town, Missouri still shuts down on Sundays.
As I walked down Main Street, the occassional driver passing by in their truck or car craned their necks to stare…
What is that woman [...]

In the Barber’s Pole

When I was a kid, my dad and brother regularly had their hair cut by the same barber.
When I was a kid, my mom would pull up in front of the post office, and my brother or I would run inside to get the mail. That was when the post office boxes were still locked [...]

O’Dear

I am not a scrap-booker or a paper-crafter. The intricacies of cutting and pasting tiny scraps of paper onto one another make my impatient hands quiver, and the cuteness of all things scrapbooky makes me groan. To be honest about it, my mom has a gift with this stuff though, and I enjoy watching her [...]

Country Days: This Small Town’s Big Tradition

That’s right y’all, this is small town life at its finest!
Like any other small town, Farmington has a revenue-boosting, visitor-drawing weekend of fun. In other towns, it might be a watermelon festival or a apple harvest. In this small town, it’s Country Days.
Up go fair booths and sidewalk sales and carnival rides, and the streets [...]

Small Town Recyling

When I moved back to Missouri three months ago, it was a shock to my system to not sort my trash for recyling at home. In the last three cities I’ve called home, recycling was mandatory, so I’m excited to see that this small town now has five large recyling bins conveniently located in the [...]

Farmington Farmers Market

I’m a big fan of local produce and homemade foods, so I was excited when the Farmington Farmers Market opened this spring. The market has grown over the past few years, and this spring, there are 10-12 vendors who regularly come out to sell plants, eggs, jellies, soaps, and more.
Always outgoing, and a curious girl [...]

Missouri Storms

I would sit in my window seat as a little girl, lights off and window cracked, watching the lightning storms and smellling the rain. Storms in Missouri blow through hard and fast.
It sounds as if God and his angels are hitting strike after strike in the bowling alley in the sky, and the lighting lights [...]

The Budweiser Clydesdales in Farmington

It was an exciting day for horse lovers and Bud lovers alike in small town Missouri. The Budweiser Clydesdales made what we can reasonably assume was their first trip to Farmington, Missouri today for an appearance at, of all places, Buffalo Wild Wings.
I arrived at the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot fifteen minutes before the [...]
