Saturday afternoon in Southeast Missouri was beautiful. The sun shone, the temperatures were lovely, and more importantly, my day off allowed me to spend some much needed time with the one and only MommaGFunk (i.e. small town girl’s mom).  If you didn’t grow up in a small Midwestern town, it might be tough to understand the relative significance of being the cheerleader who could do backflips or the running back who was interviewed on the local radio station on Saturday mornings after big games. Yesterday was a 5K in Festus, Missouri called the “Partners in Wellness 5K Fun Run/Walk”. Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Twin City Days and the Jefferson County Family YMCA (a branch of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis) worked together to sponsor this run. A family friend gave up his private pilot’s license and his personal airplane a few years ago in exchange for a Yamaha motorcycle. When he still flew, it wasn’t uncommon for him to fly families to other cities during emergencies or to help hospitals deliver organs to patients for transplant. I book-ended the summer of 2010 with float trips; one on Memorial Day and one on Labor Day. I used Bass River Resort for both floats, the first of which was along the Courtois Creek from Highway 8 to Bass River, and the second of which was from Bass River to Onandaga State Park. Though not an exclusively Missourian past time, I think that float trips are one of Missouri’s most popular summertime recreations. If you’ve never heard of a float trip, it’s exactly what it sounds like – a trip that centers on floating in a river. I don’t know much about butterflies, but I know that it’s not every day that a butterfly lands on your hand and stays there for several minutes. That’s exactly what happened during my Missouri float trip on Monday, and it was like A Small Town Girl’s Guide if Walt Disney were directing the screenplay. Each time I drive through Coffman, Missouri to visit Crown Valley Winery, Chaumette Winery, or Charleville Winery, I pass a small white frame church that sits on a humble little Ste.
