This Small Town Girl

Melissa Gilliam is A Small Town Girl, photo by Lisa Nicole Photography

I’m not your average small town girl. Although I was born and raised in a small Missouri town, I left home at 18 years old to explore the world and get my education. 7 cities, 5 states, and 2 countries and 10 years later, I returned to my small Missouri hometown from New York City with some Mandarin Chinese skills and a handful of degrees.
The most valuable thing I came home with was my perspective; I’ve become something of an expert at finding the good in any location. If I can move from New York City back to Small Town, Missouri and find beauty, edge, groove, and inspiration here, you can find the same, wherever you call home.

You’re a sweetheart, my dear. How are you? If you’ll be in town this weekend, give me a call!

    Hey,
My friend Dolly is biking accross the country and will be in Farmington by late next week. I’m planning to send her a care package to the Farmington post office and thought it would be cool to have a gift certificate with a local restaurant – she’s been biking and eating who knows what for camp food – do you have any suggestions for a nice/good restaurant where she can get a great meal? she tends to like the healthy aspect of food… :)
I stumbled upon your blog while trying to find out more about the place… hope you don’t mind my contacting you for input!
    Thanks!
    Julia

Oh wow. I just read your “I miss New York” post. I could have written every word in it! I’m here in London, where I’ve been living now for 5 years, and it’s a great and wonderful city but I still miss my beloved New York City every single day. I know that deep aching longing and loneliness for a place or a time in your life when and where everything seemed so possible and you seemed to be at the centre of everything. Even having no money for the first 4 years didn’t matter! I don’t know what I miss – the place, the people, what it represented or who I was when I lived there – but that city gets down deep into your bones and won’t let go. Thanks for that beautiful post – it has moved me and comforted me to know that I’m not alone with this endless homesickness for something or sometime I can’t get back to.

  • I found your blog refreshing and decided to share your “I Miss NYC” post with a friend who is a talk radio producer with a major network in NYC. Don’t be surprised if you get a call. Take care.

  • Hi! My name is Michaelle and I live in Desloge, Mo. Oddly enough, writing and photography are my hobbies too! Nice to meet you!

Hillary, it’s funny that you feel that way about New York while living in London. I spent a year in London a little over ten years ago and I miss is so much! It was such an incredible place, full of unbelievable history and people. Living in St. Louis pales in comparison. I thought I would live there again, however life had different plans. I hope you will eventually find some comfort in a city that I love.
